Falmouth Town Res 1, St Day 2

GAVIN BOON’s late stunner ended Falmouth Town Reserves’ hopes of cup glory on Sunday, with his St Day side prevailing in their Combination League Cup semi-final at Kernick Road, writes Matt Friday.

Joe Crossman levelled the tie on the hour after first-team manager Andrew Westgarth had given Falmouth the lead, before

Boon struck in the 89th minute to knock Town out.

St Day were the quickest to settle into the tie, with Boon and Nathan Taylor both clearing the crossbar with early sighters.

However Town were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity on 27 minutes after goalkeeper Craig Clinton brought down Westgarth, but he made amends to save Kyle Cooke’s kick.

Boon looked the most likely candidate to score and he was in the thick of it again, curling one shot onto the post before having another saved by Falmouth’s Harry McMellon.

St Day appeared to have broken the deadlock right on half-time when Jacob Cleverly found the corner from distance, only to realise that the linesman had flagged for offside.

Falmouth made the most of their good fortune and led in the 50th minute when Cooke sent a header towards the far post for Westgarth to bundle the ball home.

Town were eager to extend their lead and twice came close within the next few minutes, with Matt Wills and Clinton separately thwarting Cooke and Liam Chinn.

An action-packed 10-minute spell concluded with a St Day equaliser on the hour. A header was blocked on the line but Crossman was on hand to poke in the rebound.

Both sides had chances to take the lead with Clinton saving from Westgarth and Pollard while McMellon denied substitute Conor Miles at the other end.

But it was that man Boon who settled the tie in style in the 89th minute when he controlled a throw-in with his chest, spun, and volleyed into the far corner to send his side through.

Falmouth: H McMellon, J Pollard, A Barnicoat, R Chinn (c), B Richardson, P Hart, L Chinn, D Richardson, K Cooke, A Westgarth, F Harris. Subs (used): S Pickup, B Kemp. Subs (unused): D Stevens, K Thomas, J Benny.

Town return to Combination League action on Saturday with a trip to Pendeen Rovers.
