Falmouth Golf Club held the Royal Cornwall Goblets qualifier on Saturday, where scoring proved deceptively difficult on drying greens and the testing foursomes format, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The deserving winners were Nick Brown and Phil Jones, who combined superbly to card 35 stableford points with respective nines of 17 and 18 points including a four-point birdie at the par four eighth hole. The pair agreed afterwards they were surprised to win with what they considered an average score.

Runners up were Andy Parry and Nigel Molin. The two former local footballers and managers looked good with 18 points at the turn before running out of steam to score just 14 points on the back nine including an unfortunate double bogey at the last to come in with 32 points.

Third were Matt Roberts and Ben Browning who had “chalk and cheese” nines of 11 going out including blobs at the sixth and eighth holes, followed by an impressive 19 coming back.

Fourth were Roger Scorse and Paul Jose with 30 points after respective nines of 13 and 17.

Fifth were Dennis Nicholls and Mike Watmore also with 30 points with equal nines of 15 points each.

The top pairings will now go forward to represent the club in the Royal Cornwall Goblets on Sunday, May 13 at West Cornwall Golf Club.
