THE football and rugby seasons are winding down, which means it is that time of year where cricket comes to the fore.

The 2018 season has had a bit of a false start, with the first week being put back before then being rained off anyway. A number of games also fell victim to the weather last week, but this week Helston are back in action as they travel along the A394 to Rosudgeon.

Elsewhere, Penryn Athletic play their final Saturday game of the season at home to Holmans, while Cornwall's rugby side play their final County Championship game at Hertfordshire.

Cricket (start time 1pm)

  • Rosudgeon v Helston (County Division 1)

Helston take on Rosudgeon this weekend as they look to continue their 100 per cent start to their County Division 1 season.

That would probably be more impressive if they had played more than just the one game. Their opener against Roche was called off due to rain, before securing an eight-wicket win over Troon before having no fixture last week due to Flora Day.

Rosudgeon meanwhile have managed to actually play all three of their matches so far this season, with two wins and one defeat to their name.

The two teams last met in the league back in July 2013, when Helston won by ten wickets in their Division 2 West encounter.

Last time out: Troon - 77 all out (37.2) lost to Helston – 78-2 (28) (May 5)

Football (kick-off 3pm)

  • Penryn v Holmans (Combination League)

Penryn take on Holmans this weekend as they look to maintain their solid finish to the season.

Penryn have suffered two narrow defeats this week to Helston and Falmouth’s reserve sides, but prior to that had won eight of their previous nine and a win would see them all but confirm a top-half finish.

Athletic won the reverse fixture back in September, with Ryan Reeve (3), Will Harding and Ben Allen-Bassett scoring in a 5-3 win.

Last time out: Falmouth Town Reserves 2-1 Penryn Athletic (May 17)

Rugby (kick-off 3pm)

  • Hertfordshire v Cornwall (County Championship)

Cornwall face their final game of this year’s County Championship in the unusual position of having nothing to play for.

The Black and Gold had made it to the Twickenham final in each of the past five years, but defeat to arch-rivals Devon last week ended their hopes of a sixth straight appearance at HQ with a round to spare.

Cornwall failed to record victory in a pool stage match for the first time since the introduction of the format in 2012 when they drew with Surrey in the first round two weeks ago, before last weekend’s 20-19 defeat against Devon.

Meanwhile, Hertfordshire hammered Kent 59-21 in the first round of games before suffering a narrow 29-31 defeat at Gloucestershire last weekend.

Last time out: Cornwall 19-20 Devon (May 12)
