Penryn Athletic 4, Holmans 1

Penryn Athletic continued their impressive end to the Combination League season by hammering relegation-threatened Holmans at Kernick on Saturday.

Dan Reeve scored the opener before brother Ryan doubled the lead with a superb free-kick. Liam Willoughby reduced the deficit before half-time, but second half goals from Reggie May and Ryan Reeve secured the win for Athletic.

Penryn started well with Ryan Reeve getting a shot away inside the first minute before Russell May’s cross clipped the top of the crossbar soon after, although Adam Selley also came close for the visitors.

Penryn scored the opener in the 12th minute when Dan Reeve controlled Penryn goalkeeper Chris Symons' long goal kick and fired past the advancing Holmans goalkeeper David Zarnowski.

The two sides exchanged chances in the next few minutes, with Jamie MacDonald’s cross just evading Dan Reeve at the near post while Symons was called into action to clear his lines as Adam Brown began to bear down on goal.

But the hosts surged further ahead on 34 minutes when they won a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Ryan Reeve stepped up and delightfully curled it past Zarnowski with the aid of the underside of the crossbar.

However, the visitors closed the gap back to one just three minutes later when Penryn right-back Scott Yendle made a superb goal line clearance from Jack Mankee, but it came as far as Willoughby who fired past Symons from the edge of the box.

The hosts re-opened their two-goal advantage just 23 seconds into the second-half as Reggie May caught the Holmans defence cold and strolled down the left flank before slotting into the corner.

Kyle Marks came close to halving the deficit once again in the 56th minute, but his powerful free-kick smashed against the upright.

Penryn looked for the killer fourth goal and should have had it when Dan Reeve inexplicably fired over from two yards, before brother Ryan saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line with Reggie May and Will Harding also missing shortly after.

But it did finally come three minutes from time when Ryan Reeve sprinted past the defence and guided a shot past Zarnowski for his second of the game and 37th of the season and wrap up his side’s ninth win in their last 12 games.
