SOMERSET Wyverns AFC were on the road again last Sunday, making the trip to Cornwall to take on the Cornish Sharks and looking to make it two wins on the bounce, writes James Gibson.

The Wyverns got off to another flying start, as Tom Golden found Rowan Symonds for his first touchdown of the season, making the score 6-0 early on.

That was soon added to by running back Ross Owen, taking the score up to 12-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The visitors continued at pace, and Golden found another target in the end zone, this time Jake Viney, who scored in his second successive game.

With that score converted for two more points by Matt Hadfield, they led 20-0 at half time.

The Wyverns have struggled in the second half of games so far this season, but they looked as though they had put that behind them when Symonds scored another touchdown for what looked like an unassailable 26-0 lead in the third quarter.

The Sharks weren’t dead in the water just yet though, replying with a touchdown of their own to make it 26-6.

With a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter the game seemed done and dusted, but the Sharks defence returned an interception for a touchdown and another six points.

The Wyverns defence had been strong all day, and this time forced a safety to add two more points to the score, making it 28-12 with only a few minutes to go.

But the hosts’ defensive backs were on song again, with another interception and touchdown to cut the gap to 10 points.

The Wyverns defence held firm until the final whistle, though, with a bat-down from Matt Robert and a couple of forced fumbles and recoveries.

The final score of 28-18 to Somerset sees them remain fourth in the SFC2 West table with two wins and two losses.

They are back at North Petherton RFC on June 3, as they host playoff hopefuls Torbay Trojans.
