Falmouth Golf Club saw 61 members tee it up on Saturday for the P.D.S.A. Medal, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Mike Elliott, one of eight players to beat the par for the course, carded a superb net 66 to win on count back thanks to a splendid two under par gross 35 on the back nine.

His round included birdies at the third, ninth, 15th and 16th holes which was good enough to win from Rob Eccleston who also played well and included a birdie at the 14th.

Third was Martin Parsons with a fine net 68 including a birdie at the 16th.

The Club is also delighted with the success of two of its juniors at the County Championship held at Truro on Sunday.

Maisie Drewett won the Girls under-15 title and William Sercombe came sixth in the boys under-14 championship.

  • A busy week at Praa Sands concluded on Sunday with Allan Lawrence and Mel Smith winning the Entertainments Trophy with 43 pts.

Rod Jones and Doug Pedrick came second on countback with 41 pts, with Ray Crebo and Michael Jacka in third.

On Wednesday the ladies played a nine-hole competition with Lesley Townsend winning, Anne Griffiths in second & Ann Seabrook third.

The Seniors played their monthly medal on Wednesday afternoon and Jess Willard showed everyone the way, scoring 58. Rodger Pearce came second with 60 with Mike Brownfield third on 62.

Saturday afternoon saw the ladies competing for the Jubilee Rosebowl. Anne Griffiths won with 36 pts, Phyllis Williams was second with 32 and Wendy Keys was third on 30.

The ladies next meet on Wednesday morning and the Ogres in the afternoon.

The club supported the charity ‘Newlife’ for disabled children over the weekend and thank all those who contributed.

  • The annual keenly fought better-ball pairs match between Budock Vean’s male Cornish Members and the Rest of the World was held at the weekend.

There were many close games but the men of Cornwall had the edge to cruise to a 4-2 victory.

The Ladies played earlier for the Read Foursomes Salver. The winners were Glenys Bateson and Marlene Williams with 33 pts, with Sue Parsons and Shirley Mildren runners-up on 32.

The Seniors medal saw two remarkable scores of net 61. Charlie Averiss won on countback from Roger Mildren, with Bob Hartnell in third on 67.

  • Alan Retallack and Nigel Norton won the Seniors Invitation Day Competition at Mullion with an impressive score of 47 Stableford points (format Betterball).

Keith and Dave Popperwell were second with 45, with Chris Dale and Paul Read in third on 42.
