The weather is turning warmer, sailors are brushing up their racing skills and the regatta season is getting underway in sailing clubs and villages all around the Fal and Falmouth Bay, from Mylor to St Mawes and Flushing to Helford, and many other spots in between.

But what of Falmouth itself? People have been asking what happened to Falmouth’s own regatta.

Some with longish memories will recall that there used to be one, but for some reason it just stopped one year.

The good news is that it is back for 2018 and will be taking place on Saturday, June 16, at the end of a fabulous week of yacht racing history when Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, winner and sole finisher of the 1969 Golden Globe single-handed round the world race returns with his yacht Suhaili to Falmouth, together with the entire Golden Globe fleet of 2018.

Entrants are invited to cap off this historic week by taking part in the Falmouth Town Regatta.

The regatta is open to all classes and it’s hoped it will become a new and enjoyable annual feature of the season, celebrating all that is great about Falmouth.

Organised by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, full details are available at royalcornwallyachtclub.org and all those wishing to take part are warmly invited to register as soon as they can.
