Peter Le Grice (Mounts Bay Harriers) and Heidi Tregenza (Cornwall AC) stormed to victory in last week’s 19th Summer Turkey Trot four-mile road race, writes Alan Rowling.

The race was the eighth of the Cornwall Grand Prix Series, sponsored by Cornwall Glass.

Le Grice was already 100 metres clear of Tony Brewer (Mile High) after one mile, with Colin Snook (Cornwall AC) in a chasing pack of six, comprising mostly Cornwall AC athletes.

The Mount’s Bay man looked in a class of his own, extending his lead mile after mile, eventually finishing 41 seconds ahead of Brewer, with Snook emerging from the chasing pack in the closing stages to snatch third place, a few seconds ahead of the Cornwall AC duo of Falmouth-based Sam Goodchild and Tom Slattery.

Tregenza began at a fast pace in the Ladies race and was well clear by halfway.

Nicola Squires made an impressive debut for Newquay Road Runners and settled into second place early on.

But despite closing on the leader, she never seriously threatened her as Tregenza won her third GP race of the year by 24 seconds.

Cornwall AC’s Ladies Team Captain Emma Stepto, after five successive Turkey Trot victories, had to be content with third place on this occasion, returning exactly the same time (23.50) as she did in the 2017 race.

Cornwall AC completed a team double, with the men beating Mile High by 59 points, while the ladies finished 12 points ahead of Newquay Road Runners who were well clear of third-placed Hayle Runners.
