Former Manchester United footballer Wes Brown joined St Day Youth AFC and the Cornwall FA on Sunday as they hosted a Community Football Day providing a fun, free football-themed day out for families whilst celebrating the work of grassroots clubs in the local area.

The event at St Day Youth AFC saw over a thousand young footballers of all ages, genders and abilities come together in a celebration of grassroots football in their community.

The Community Football Day gave local children the opportunity to try various football skills and drills, introduced the game to new players and reignited a love for football amongst all those in attendance.

Manchester United and England legend Wes Brown took part in some of the football skills activities, teaching the children in attendance some of his top-level techniques.

He also posed for selfies, signed autographs and spoke to coaches, volunteers and parents about the importance of grassroots football throughout the day.

“Days like today are what football’s all about – bringing communities together and seeing so many young players enjoying themselves with smiles on their faces,” said Brown.

“St Day Youth AFC plays such a huge role in the local area and the passion and dedication from all the coaches was hugely inspiring to see.

“I was really impressed by all the players too – their love for football really shone through, whether they were new to the sport or had been playing for years – the future of football in this country is clearly in great hands!”

Local McDonald’s franchisee Dave Wynne, a long-time supporter of grassroots football in Redruth, said: “McDonald’s Community Football Days are truly a celebration of football for everyone in the local area.

"These events are always incredibly popular and this weekend’s activity was no exception, with children of all ages and abilities taking part. I hope everyone who attended had a great day.”

The Community Football Day was part of McDonald’s community partnership with The FA. The company has been FA Community Partner for over 16 years and during this time, it has helped thousands of clubs raise the standards of administration, coaching and child welfare, enabling over four million kids to play good quality football across the UK.
