FALMOUTH TOWN 3 NEWTON ABBOT SPURS 0 Falmouth Town held on to third spot in the Carlsberg South West Pennula League's premier division with this comfortable victory over Newton Abbot Spurs, consigning them to their third consecutive defeat.

This was Spurs' first visit to Bickland Park for 37 years and they retained their unwanted record of not winning there (although they won at Town's old Union Corner ground in the first ever meeting in the 195-52 season) in a match in which they never seriously threatened.

Town needed just four minutes to take the lead as Jamie Morrison-Hill, who had another good game on the right flank, played a penetrating ball into the area where Andy Bowker took it in his stride and coolly drew the goalkeeper before slotting the ball past him into the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season.

Shortly afterwards Glen Squires weaved his way past two defenders before putting the ball across to Matt Cusack, but his shot was well saved by Ross Bellotti, the son of former Town 'keeper Derek.

Matt Godfree came after just 10 minutes to replace the injured Lee Beer and he had a good game in the centre of midfield.

Newton Spurs launched a rare attack after 20 minutes with a three- man move which ended with Kevin Gardner hitting a shot straight at Nathan Murphy in the Town goal.

Falmouth doubled their lead after 24 minutes when some good inter passing between Darren Burchell and Bowker ended with the former slamming the ball home from just inside the area.

Spurs were forced into making a substitution just after this as Nick Hayman collided with a team mate and was unable to continue, Nick Cousins came on to replace him.

Bowker went on a good run on the right and put over a perfect cross which eluded the keeper 'but Squires' glancing header went wide of the gaping net.

The match, as a contest, was as good as over after four minutes of the second half. Town forced a corner and the ball was swung over everyone in the middle, to be met on the volley by Squires at the far side of the box and the ball flew through a crowd of players into the back of the net.

Newton continued with their laboured build-ups and any attacks were competently dealt with and after 64 minutes Town's new signing, Dominic Rivans, came on to replace Aaron Cusack in the midfield.

Town forced another couple of corners, but despite the efforts of Town's defenders pushing forward, the Spurs defence kept the ball out and managed a quick breakaway move which saw Breslan run down their right flank and cross into Gary Byrne but he hurried his shot and sliced it wide.

Fergus Nevin came on to replace the hard working Andy Bowker ten minutes from time and was straight into the action, taking a corner on the right which Neil Bettis headed wide. Just prior to this Burchell hit a curling 25 yard free kick which Bellotti did well to tip over the crossbar.

With five minutes remaining Nevin made a quick break out of defence and put a good ball into the middle to Squires who slammed a shot goalwards from 15 yards which brought a great reaction save from Bellotti.

Two minutes from time Town forced another corner which saw captain for the game Brinton Nute's powerful header tipped round the post by the 'keeper for another corner which was cleared away to safety by Breslan.

Town have no game on Saturday, but entertain Camelford in the Cornwall Senior Cup on December 1 (2.30 kick off).
