Boxers from the Falmouth and Penryn Amateur Boxing club enjoyed success on Saturday, October 30 on a sell out show hosted by the St Ives Bay ABC at Marazion’s Community Centre.

The show was the first of its kind to be held in Cornwall since the lockdown and attracted large numbers, including strong support from Falmouth and Penryn who were there to support the three boxers from the local club.

Representing the club first was debutant Alex Penny who contested Torbay ABC’s Tom Birch in the 54kg category. Penny faced an aggressive pressure fighter in Birch but managed to maintain composure and used his superior movement and punch selection to outpoint the Devon boxer.

Making excellent use of his powerful southpaw lead left hand, Penny stopped Birch in his tracks on several occasions and proved too much for the Torbay boxer on the night and earned himself a well-deserved victory.

Next up for the club was Dan Lea who was also taking part in his first bout. Lea’s opponent was the more experienced Alfie Rees of Taunton’s Blue Flames ABC.

The 69kg bout got off at a fast pace, with both boxers making their impact on the fight from early on. Rees used his ring experience to apply pressure throughout the contest with Lea keeping a cool head and landing some beautiful right hands and left hooks of his own.

Rees’s pressure started to pay off later into the contest and Lea struggled to keep up the pace the more experienced boxer set. The final round sealed the victory for Taunton boxer, but Lea showed great heart and determination in what was a tough but great learning fight for the young boxer.

Lastly was middleweight Callum Nancholas who was making his second appearance in less than a month against former Falmouth and Penryn boxer Tom Temp.

Temp who now boxes for St Ives Bay was the bigger fighter and attempted to use that to his advantage from early on in the bout, looking to rough up Nancholas and drag him into a war.

However, Nancholas utilised great boxing intellect and avoided power shots from Temp whilst landing clean jabs to the body and head of the St Ives man.

The crowd was bought to their feet in the second has both fighters traded blows before Nancholas again used lovely boxing skills and agility to avoid Temps rough tactics and land spiteful right hand head shots and left hooks to the bigger man’s body.

Nancholas’s corner instructed him to put his foot down and close the show before coming out for the third and final round and he responded by doing just that, earning himself a third-round stoppage victory in the process.

Nancholas who finished off a memorable night of boxing for Falmouth and Penryn in style celebrated his 23rd birthday on the night and left the ring to the crowd singing him happy birthday.

Commenting on the successful outing for the club, coach Danny Cole said: "All the coaches are proud of the work and determination shown, the boys did very well in their debuts, and to put the icing on the cake what a performance from Callum!

"Written off as the underdog by many and tonight he showed what he’s all about with a beautiful left hook to end the contest!”

The club would like to thank all fans that travelled to support the boxers and the St Ives Bay ABC for hosting a great night of boxing.
