Falmouth and Penryn Amateur Boxing club host a brilliant night of boxing in front of a sellout crowd at the Dracena Centre in Falmouth on Saturday, April 30.

The show was the first boxing event to take place in the town in over two years and attracted an audience of 500.

There were nine local boxers taking part in the action-packed 15 bout night, alongside boxers who travelled from all over the southwest to take part in the unforgettable evening.

To start the proceeding there were three skills bouts, giving junior boxers the opportunity to jump in the ring and box non-competitively in front of the packed audience.

Falmouth and Penryn’s Sid Wolff and Tom Perkins both put in tremendous efforts in their respective skills bouts and no doubt took on a lot of confidence and knowledge from the experience, both showed great maturity, and seemed to enjoy the experience.

16-year-old Lauren Partridge was the first of the club’s boxers to take part in a competitive bout. Partridge was matched against Alice Scriven of Grey Ranks boxing club, Weymouth whose taller height and longer arms proved to be a little much for Partridge.

Partridge never stopped trying to find new angles to attack from and maintained a solid work rate throughout, but unfortunately, on this occasion the visiting boxer’s size and strength ensured that Scrivens was awarded a unanimous decision.

Next up was the ever-improving Harry Morris who faced Jasper Leach from Exmouth ABC in a 62kg bout. 14-year-old Morris showed initiative from the very start by dominating the centre of the ring, keeping Leach circling away from his punishing southpaw jab.

Morris’s persistent pressure paid off and caused a cut on the visiting boxer in the opening round. The next two rounds followed a similar dominant pattern, with Morris walking the Exmouth boxer down and pinning him in the corner with spiteful straight punches.

The last of the junior boxers from the Falmouth and Penryn club was 17-year-old Dan Lea who faced Sam Martyn of the St Austell club in a highly entertaining 73kg bout. The difference in styles made for an interesting bout as the smaller Martyn attempted to close the distance with good head movement and quick combinations, while Lea tried to keep the St Austell boxer at the end of his left jab.

The second round started at a blisteringly fast pace with both boxers landing a good number of shots until a particularly powerful left, right combination from Lea caused Martyn to stumble to the ropes and receive a standing count.

The bout remained competitive with Martyn in no way doing himself discredit, however the Falmouth and Penryn boxer’s strength and powerful punches made sure that Lea went away with a well-deserved unanimous points victory.

Ben Perry was the first of the senior boxers to represent the club on the night, he took on Daniel Barrett from St Columb Major in his 75kg debut bout.

Perry dominated proceedings from the opening bell, repeatedly landing snappy jabs, big left hooks, and overhand rights. Perry’s speed and accuracy appeared to take the fight out of the larger St Columb Major boxer who went into defensive mode in the second and third rounds.

The Falmouth and Penryn boxer won each round clearly and walked away with a well-deserved unanimous points victory much to the crowd’s delight, his fitness, speed, and skills taking him to another level than his opponent.

Another crowd favourite Ben Ambrose took to the ring next in what was to be a highly skilled encounter at 80kg against Torbay ABC’s Alex Yolland.

The two boxers maintained great boxing skills throughout the three times two-minute rounds, each of them showcasing great head and feet movement to avoid punches. Each boxer demonstrated a wide range of punches and ring knowledge which provided an entertaining and even match-up.

It was Ambrose’s relentless work to the torso of Yolland and his accurate uppercuts that won him the fight and the award of the boxer of the night. Most particularly in the third round when the Falmouth and Penryn Boxer backed up his opponent with a series of sickening hooks to the body and powerful right uppercuts.

Next in the ring for the club was Callum Nancholas in his third outing of the season, again taking on a good opponent in St Just’s Charlie Bosworth in a well matched 70kg bout.

It was another great bout with each boxer displaying a high skill level, however, it was Nancholas’s superior fitness to constantly pressure Bosworth and his consistent jabs to the St Just man’s body that caught the eye in the first and second.

Nancholas upped the ante in the third round, rocking Bosworth with a couple of stinging right-hand shots that knocked his head back. Nancholas won the bout by a well-deserved unanimous victory.

The last bout of the evening saw 82kg Kaidan Symons take on familiar foe in Lukasz Kucharski, the pair meeting just four weeks ago with Kucharski taking the decision.

This time Symons took the initiative straight away and fired off snappy jabs whilst moving in and out of the range of the come-forward style stockier Kucharski. Symons used great head movement and footwork to avoid the left hooks from the visiting boxer and peppered away at him with jabs to score shots.

The pair again made a fantastic bout with their different styles and again it was a close competitive affair. This time, however, Symons took a well-deserved victory and ended a highly successful evening for Falmouth and Penryn ABC in style.
