The "British Lions" 1971 touring side who faced Penryn in 1973 reunited in Falmouth during the weekend of May 23rd-25th with great success.

The two sets of old players and old friends took part in a series of events during the course of the weekend, to not only rekindle great friendships and memories, but to raise money for the worthy cause of the Alzheimer's association and the youth section at Penryn Rugby club.

There were many legendary figures who made the events including the likes of Welsh greats Gareth Edwards and Derek Quinell, JPR Williams, Mervyn Davies and "Mighty Mouse" Ian Mclaughlan to name just a few.

The "Lions" were treated to some infamous Penryn hospitality where they were often greeted with traditional Cornish song and a strong friendly hand shake. The "Lions" viewed the super yachts at Pendennis Shipyard where they went on to be welcomed by the present Penryn under 15s singing the Sloop John B, the 1971 tour anthem.

A pint and a pasty was available to all those who attended the reception, thanks to W C Rowe and St Austell Breweryp.

In the afternoon the "Lions" met with their Penryn counterparts for afternoon tea. They were joined by Mary May, Penryn's mayor, and John Body, representing Falmouth.

A late request from the "Lions" who wanted to watch the Heineken cup final led to a hastily arranged visit to Penryn Rugby club to watch the game on Sky TV. Dressed in dinner suits a group of Lions made this unexpected trip to Penryn RFC.

Later in the evening a gala dinner was held at the Falmouth Hotel where there was not a seat to be had. The fantastic turnout echoed the interest locally and how the imagination of the local community had been grabbed.

Guests were treated to some humorous stories thanks to the likes of Ian Mcloughlin and Gareth Edwards, who deemed the weekend a marvellous occasion. Also getting in on the act was former Wales flanker, and now ITV rugby commentator John Taylor who helped auction some memorabilia to help raise funds for the charities. The evening also paid many a glowing tribute to the late Les Williams for whom, the tributes were fitting.

The "Lions" completed their weekend with golf - thanks to Falmouth Golf Club - on Sunday before heading home with as many warm memories from the reunion as they gained in '73.

The committee would like to express their thanks to those who contributed or helped along the way to a thoroughly enjoyable and successful weekend.
