Lightning doesn't often strike twice, as Falmouth found out on Saturday as St Just quickly made amends for their previous week's defeat in the Cockspur Cup.

They returned to Trescobeas and won at a canter by 113 runs to further cement their position at the top of the Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League.

Falmouth remain in third spot however as Truro could only tie at Newquay.

St Just were strengthened by the inclusion of Kiwis Adam Barrett and Darren Cudby, who were ineligible for the cup tie, and both made telling contributions.

Batting first, the St Just openers David Roberts and Neil Curnow laid their customary base putting on 75 before Curnow was caught by Ayres off the bowling of Angove for 40.

Gary Thomas made 21 to see the 100 up before Jon Udy had him caught and bowled. Ayres then claimed the prize scalp of Roberts for 60 that included a six and seven fours.

The visitors bat well down the order however and Cudby made 41 with Gavin Edwards and Gareth May both getting into the 20s to see 243 for 6 on the board after 50 overs. Antony Angove, who in a miscalculation was allowed to bowl an extra over, took three for 66. Ayres, Lloyd Scott and Udy took one apiece.

Falmouth lost Steve Williams, to an unfortunate run out for 0. Larry Martin and Gordon Whorlow added 38 for the second wicket before the game dramatically turned in St Just's favour.

Barrett got to work to knock over the top order taking three for 22 from his 10 overs. Martin was caught for 11 before Whorlow followed lbw for 24. Stefan Churcher and Adrian Noott both departed quickly and when skipper Ayres was dismissed by his opposite number, Gareth May, Falmouth were reduced to 65 for 6.

Antony Angove with 37 and Jon Udy with 24 got their heads down to salvage a couple of batting bonus points. The pair added 53 for the seventh wicket. Nick George came back accounted for them both and returned impressive figures of three for 13 from nine overs.

The 50 over "win/lose" games are now completed as the season is a third over. After making one fruitless trip to Werrington already this season, due to the weather, Falmouth return to Ladycross on Saturday for the start of the 110 over "Time" games. All games for the remainder of the season in the Premier League will start at 1pm.

St Just (20 pts) beat Falmouth (5pts) by 113 runs.

Falmouth's venture in this season's Cockspur Cup ended on Sunday when they went out to Plymouth at Trescobeas by five wickets.

The tie was switched to Falmouth on the eve of the game because of the recent heavy rains in Devon.

Falmouth were below par with the bat and were bowled out for only 121. Duncan Ayres (30) and George Popperwell (30no) were the chief run scorers. Antony Angove was an absentee as he was representing Cornwall against Devon at St Just.

Andy Horrill took three for 25. Callum Whittaker top scored with 37 as Plymouth went on to win by five wickets with two overs to spare.

Falmouth skipper Ayres completed a good game taking three for 22.

Falmouth 121 (D Ayres 30, G Popperwell 30no; A Horrill 3-25), Plymouth 122-5 (C Whittaker 37, K Willcocks 30, C Barr 28; D Ayres 3-22). Plymouth beat Falmouth by five wickets.
