IN heavy drizzle and gusting winds, Redruth A visited Falmouth Bowling Club's A team in a top team competition on Friday night. This competition involves 11 players contesting all the disciplines of two-wood and four- wood singles, pairs, triples and fours. Redruth fielded a strong side and Falmouth knew they would have to be on top form to beat them. The result is determined by the number of matches won, i.e. first to win three matches wins the tie.

In the two-wood singles played over 21 ends, Redruth's Gerald Fisher managed to get the better of Doug Travers as Redruth won 16-6.

In the four-wood singles, first to 21 shots, Redruth's most experienced Robin Walters was to play Falmouth's youngest player Tristan Beale and young Tristan played brilliantly to win 21-11.

Tom Reid and Ron Medlyn played the pairs against Barry Kessell and Terry Simmons and after a very close game, Falmouth won 22-19. Falmouth's triples of Moss Fuller, David Hay and David Winnan were too good for Redruth's Ian Marsden's rink and won 20-6.

In the fours Falmouth's Paddy McMullen, Gerald Benney, Tony Pereir and Terry Nancholas played superbly against Richard Brown's Redruth rink and raced away to a 35-11 win including an eight (hot shot) on the ninth end. This meant Falmouth won the tie four-nil and now go to the semi finals against Penryn who defeated Mylor Bridge.

The club's A team played two B teams last week and did not come out of it exactly smelling of violets.

Redruth Bs visited Falmouth on Tuesday and put up a good fight, not surprising as they have had some good results of late.

A's David Winnan's rink did not have it all their own way but did enough to lead at the interval over Redruth's Ed Perkins' rink 11-7. The game continued being close right to the end as the A's ran out winners 22-15.

Colin Whitfeld's rink were in great form with Moss Fuller, Doug Travers, Tony Nancholas and Colin all bowling well and by the tea interval led 16-8 against Bob Howarth's Redruth rink.

After tea the As raced away to an excellent 31-13 win to make sure of an overall win.

Ron Medlyn's A rink did not get out of the starting blocks and after a dreadful first ten ends were losing 14-5. After tea, things improved for the As and they pulled back to within five shots 15-21 after 19 ends. Holding five shots to tie the game, Les Vanstone, who skipped the Redruth rink, with his very last bowl, bowled it well wide only to see the bowl wick off not one but two bowls to rest on the jack for shot.

The As never recovered and Redruth won 21-18 leaving Falmouth As with four points and Redruth Bs one point.

Visiting Mylor B on Thursday proved a disastrous evening for Falmouth A. The Mylor ground has a jinx on the Falmouth teams as nothing ever seems to go their way.

Colin Whitfeld's rink soon took a 5-1 lead and were looking good but the experienced Peter Clarke's rink bounced back to lead 11-7 at the tea interval. The As could only score two shots out of the next eight ends and although the Mylor team bowled well, lady luck was not with Falmouth and the As lost 12-19.

Ron Medlyn's rink for Falmouth were against the very experienced Chris Loader's rink who really bowled well, but like the other game, nothing went Falmouth's way and they trailed 12-5 at tea.

After 16 ends Mylor led 20-9, but the A's rink suddenly clicked into form and picked up 2-2-1-2 to trail 21-16. Holding six on the last end the As had to stand and watch Chris Loader draw second bowl to win overall by five shots.

David Winnan's A rink are bowling well now with a settled team and the good teamwork showed as they took a 12-5 lead over David Sherman's rink.

Mylor pulled back to trail only 11-13 after 14 ends with John Richards, formerly with Falmouth, having a great game against his former colleagues.

The A rink held on to play out a 21-14 win leaving Mylor B with four points and Falmouth As one point, a most disappointing result for the Falmouth rink who should win against all B teams in the league if everything ran true to form.

Falmouth B visited Perranporth A on Tuesday needing points desperately. B's Paul Williams' rink led Howard Jewell's Perranporth rink 11-7 at tea but by the 15th end, the Perran rink had drawn level 14-14. Falmouth then collected 3-3-2 to go on and win the game 24-16.

The B's Paul Bobin's rink trailed 4-11 at the tea interval against Peter Andrews' Perranporth rink and things did not improve in the second period as Perranporth went on to win 20-11.

John Oldcroft's rink had a poor start against the experienced Keith Trenerry's rink as the Perranporth team opened up a 9-1 lead after six ends. However, the Bs made a spirited recovery to only trail 11-13 after 13 ends, but they got stuck on 11 for the next four ends and Perranporth, now in the ascendancy, won the game 24-15 gaining four points to Falmouth B's one point.

The Bs welcomed Stithians to Falmouth on Thursday to be involved in a very closely fought game.

Paul Williams' rink led Max Burley's Stithians rink 10-7 at the tea interval but both sides were level at 15-15 after 18 ends. Then Stithians took the lead to enter the last end 18-15 up but Falmouth scored a three on the last end to tie the game 18-18.

John Oldcroft's B rink were one shot in arrears at tea 8-9. After tea the game see-sawed with Falmouth going ahead 16-15 then Stithians going ahead 20-16 but Falmouth with a three and a one tied the game 20-20. Two tied games is most unusual.

Paul Bobin's B rink had a good lead at tea 14-7 and things looked promising as they went on to lead 21-12 after 17 ends. Stithians won the last four ends with 2-2-1-1, not enough to threaten Falmouth who won 22-16 to collect four points to Stithians' one point.

Falmouth C visited Chacewater C expecting a really tough encounter. The C's Bill Adams' rink led by example and at tea were 13-7 in the lead against Chacewater's C Martin's rink. The Falmouth team kept their form in the second period and ran out 24-16 winners, rather surprised at their result, but deserved.

Bob Mynett's Falmouth rink trailed Brian Park's Chacewater rink at the tea interval 15-11, but after tea won seven out of the next eight ends to lead 22-17 after 18 ends. Chacewater fought back with a one and a four to tie the game 22-22 with the last end to come, which went to Falmouth, winning 23-22.

Falmouth C's Alan Winn's rink were 7-8 in arrears at tea against Terry Mankee's rink from Chacewater but fell further behind as the Chacewater rink picked up two fours to end the game with a win 20-16, leaving Falmouth C with four points and Chacewater C one point.

The C's welcomed Redruth D on Wednesday and proved far too strong for their visitors.

Alan Winn's Falmouth rink with Harry Hodge at three, Jim Chatterton number two and Chris Chatterton leading, had a dream start against Bill Uren's Redruth rink as in the very first end picked up eight shots (hot shot). They increased their lead to 21-5 by the tea interval. Things did not improve for the Redruth rink as Falmouth ran away with the game to win 41-8.

Bill Adams' Falmouth rink also had an impressive start to lead 16-4 at tea. After tea Redruth could only score two shots out of the last 11 ends and Falmouth amassed a huge score of 46-6 to win.

Falmouth's Brian Chambers' rink did not have a good start as M Styles' Redruth rink led at the tea interval 9-6, which they increased to 15-6 after 13 ends. However, they could only score one more shot in the game as the Falmouth rink suddenly found some form to win the last four ends to record a 22-16 win, giving Falmouth C five points and Redruth D zero points.
