Victory for Cornwall


(Southern Counties Under 21 Championship) Cornwall Under 21s got off to a winning start in this season’s Southern Counties Championship against the Isle of Wight at Wadebridge.

Cornwall, captained by Matt Rowe, won the toss and elected to bat.

Matt Robins was bowled in the second over trying to leave a ball and dragging it on to his stumps. Matt Rowe then joined Taylor Williams and they proceeded to accumulate a partnership of 153 before Williams fell for 61.

Joe Crane joined Rowe and 56 was added before Crane was caught for 23. Alex Smeeth (11) and Kelvin Snell (18no) then added support to Rowe who finally lost his wicket for 122 in the 46th over.

Rowe hit three sixes and 14 fours. Chris Roberts (14 no) completed the Cornwall innings posting a total of 296 for 5 in their 50 overs. The Isle of Wight innings was quickly in trouble at 10 for two in the first five overs.

Their best partnership, of 35, for the third wicket was between their top scorer, A. Hose, 38, and J. Miller,26. Wickets fell on a regular basis, Cornwall employing eight bowlers, all of whom bowled well to dismiss the Islanders for 123 in 45 overs. The next game is against Wiltshire at St. Austell on Sunday at 1pm.

Cornwall 296-5 (M Rowe 122, T Williams 61, J Crane 23, K Snell 18no), Isle of Wight 123 (A Hose 38, J Miller 26 (K Snell 2-6, M Rowe 2-10, A Smeeth 2-17). Cornwall (2pts) beat Isle of Wight by 173 runs.
