It was a magnificent day for Cornwall Athletic Club in the Magnificent 7 race at Saltash, round ten of the Cornwall Glass and Glazing Grand Prix Series, where both the top individual and team honours went to the Carn Brea based club. In the men’s race, their evergreen veteran Dave Buzza came out on top in his now annual battle with Tavistock’s Jim Cole. In 2007, Buzza got the better of Cole, whilst last year Cole gained revenge and edged out Buzza. In the early stages, it appeared that Cole had the edge again, as he reached the top of the long steep climb at one-and-a-half miles ten metres or so clear of Buzza. Shortly after the two-mile mark, the Cornwall athlete caught his Devon rival and both were then joined by Hayle’s Peter Ellis. After a bit of sparring, Buzza gradually eased away from these two, eventually coming home almost a minute clear of Cole, with Ellis just behind in third. In the team competition, Cornwall Athletic Club’s men’s team got back to winning ways after their defeat four days earlier in the Summer Turkey Trot, winning comfortably with the low score of 59 points, well clear of Tamar Trotters (184 points), with Newquay Road Runners only six points behind the host club in third place.
There was a similar exchange of top honours in the ladies’ race. Last year had seen East Cornwall Harrier Revis Crowle gaining the upper hand over Emma Stallard (Cornwall Athletic Club). However, Emma also gained sweet revenge to claim top spot, almost two minutes ahead of Revis, finishing twenty second overall out of a field of 364 finishers. Cornwall’s Suzy Bosustow improved by one place and twenty-five seconds compared to last year, crossing the line in third position.
Race winner Emma commented afterwards: “I had a bit of a cold last week but felt fine today and was pleased to run well over a minute faster than last year. My race plan went really well, hitting all my mile splits and finishing well within my target time.”
There was also a good finish for Falmouth Road Runner Elouise Lee who came home in 7th place (2nd in the Under 35 age group) with a time of 51.38.
The ladies’ team title went to Corrnwall Athletic Club for the ninth time in the Grand Prix Series this year, with Tamar Trotters equalling the feat of their men in second spot and again, as in the men’s race, finishing just a few points clear of third placed club, who this time were St Austell Running Club.
