Falmouth A team knew they were in for a tougher week of bowls as A team captain, Tony Nancholas, set the team a challenge to gain five points over the two matches. The As did not quite achieve this, but did get four and a half points and should have made certain of five.

REDRUTH B 54 FALMOUTH A 62

Visiting Redruth on Tuesday, Falmouth were surprised the green had not been cut, which made bowling heavy and very little draw on the rinks.

On rink four, Falmouth’s Tom Reid's rink soon realised whoever got to the jack first would win the end, as with so little draw on the green the only option left open was to remove the shot bowl with weight.

In a very low scoring game, Falmouth held the lead for 19 ends, but were disappointed to lose a four on the penultimate end to give Redruth’s David Lawrence rink a one shot lead. But Falmouth wee holding three shots on the last end only to see David play weight at the head and knock a Redruth bowl into the head for second shot, leaving the result a tie 16-16.

On rink five, Falmouth’s Paul Bobin rink took an excellent lead 14-8 after ten ends and increased this to 25-13 after 18 ends. Bernard Nankivell’s Redruth rink were unable to recover from this situation as Falmouth ran out winners 26-16.

Rink six saw Redruth’s Ian Marsden's rink take a 10-3 lead after six ends, but David Winnan's Falmouth rink recovered the situation with a 4-3 to level the scores at 10-10, level again at 13-13 and 14-14. Redruth broke the deadlock and scored 1-4-3-1 to lead 22-14, but Falmouth did not lay down but took the last four ends, but could not quite catch Redruth who won the game by two shots 22-20 leaving Falmouth 3½, Redruth 1½ points.

FALMOUTH A 50 CARNON A 66

Falmouth welcomed Carnon As on Thursday and although Carnon were without two or three of their top players, they still were able to field nine Middleton Cup players and trialists, showing the depth of their squad.

Falmouth’s Paul Bobins rink found themselves 4-0 in arrears to Carnon’s Steve Lawers rink, but recovered to 4-4 only then to see Carnon take the next seven ends to take a 13-5 lead.

After 16 ends Carnon led 18-8 but Falmouth recovered with a 1-2-2 to reduce the lead to 18-13, but both teams then scored three each on the last two ends to leave Carnon winners 21-16.

Tom Reid’s Falmouth rink were to take on Colin Allen’s Carnon rink with three county players included. Carnon’s Charlie Gay started in tremendous form for Carnon to take a 7-2 lead. However, Falmouth were to hit back with 2-2-3-2 to take the lead 11-7. Carnon levelled the game at 11-11, 13-13 and 14-14.

Carnon were then put under pressure by Falmouth’s Gerald Benney’s leading and getting the better of Carnon’s lead. This enabled the Falmouth team to win the last four ends to win the match 18-17 in a superb game of bowls with both teams displaying a lot of skilful bowling.

Falmouth’s David Winnan's rink had a strange task ahead of them as the Carnon rink included three former Falmouth players, Tristan Beale, Andy Richards and David Perrin. This was proving to be a very close game as both teams were level at 6-6 after eight ends.

Carnon then took a 4-5-1 to take a decisive lead 19-8 with David Winning having really bad luck with this conversion shots. Carnon now on top went on to win this game 28-16 and secure four points to Falmouth’s one point.

FALMOUTH B 66 PERRANPORTH 50

Falmouth’s John Jones rink on rink one found Perranporth’s Keith Trenerry's rink in good form as only a week previously they had played on this rink and were comfortable on it as they took a 6-0 lead.

The Falmouth rink were being thwarted by Peter Hudson, Perran’s number three and their skip Keith and after 19 ends Perran led 20-11. The Falmouth rink saved a heavy defeat by picking up five shots on the penultimate end, but lost the game 21-16.

Falmouth’s Paul Williams rink had a great start to take a 13-7 lead after nine ends and were to enhance this by scoring two successive sixes to lead 25-7. There was no way back for John Keers, Perranporth rink, as Falmouth sent on to win 32-17.

Falmouth’s Harry Coults rink made a good start to lead 9-1 after eight ends and went further ahead to lead 14-2 after ten ends. After tea Perranporth’s Terry Hughes rink improved and won the second half of this game 10-8, but the good start by the Falmouth team was enough to see them home 18-12 and take four points to Perranporth’s one point.

STITHIANS 64, FALMOUTH C 52

Falmouth’s Bob Mynett led his team to a 17-5 lead after 12 ends against Stithians Max Burley’s rink. Falmouth then got stuck on 17 after the tea break as Stithians recovered to be only two shots in arrears 18-16 after 19 ends. But Falmouth took two shots on the penultimate end to win the match 20-17 – an excellent win.

Falmouth’s Alan Winn's rink with new personnel took a 7-0 lead after four ends against David Pascoe’s Stithians rink. But the next two ends saw Stithians win 6-3 to take a rapid lead 9-7. Falmouth were then pegged back by the experienced David Pascoe and his well known players, as Stithians won ten of the next 11 ends to go on and win the game 30-17.

John Maunders Falmouth rink took a 6-0 lead after six ends, but Stithians Harry Barnes rink soon came on form to take a 2-3-3 then a four to take a 13-11 lead.

The Falmouth rink recovered to take the lead again 14-13, but Stithians came back with a 2-1 to again go ahead 16-14. Both the last two ends were shared and Stithians won a very close encounter 17-15 take four points to Falmouth Cs one point.

Falmouth Ladies were in action this week in the Date Cup playing Penryn on Falmouth. Penryn wee just too strong and won the game overall.

Falmouth A 33, Penryn 39: S Morris 8, C Perrin 28; M Edwards 25, C Pellow 11 – Falmouth 1, Penryn 3 points. Falmouth’s Date B visited Perranporth this week on a very heavy uncut green but managed to take three points away with them.
