Penryn Athletic moved to within a point of league leaders Newquay by thrashing Truro City Reserves 6-0 on Saturday.

Steve Brewer scored a second half hat-trick for Penryn as they continued their unbeaten start to the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one (west) season.

It took them only seven minutes to open the scoring against a youthful Truro City side, as Cody Cooke played the ball into Kayne Trevaskis. He swept past the last defender before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of, former Penryn keeper, Steve Raven’s net.

However, bottom of the table Truro were more than a match for their high-flying opponents in the first half and had their fair share of chances in and around the Penryn six yard box.

Penryn, who had put ten goals past struggling Mousehole earlier this season, were slow in getting forward and didn’t match their opponent’s endeavour in the first half.

The second half was a different story though as they scored the all important second goal on 59 minutes. It came from a Jamie Thirkle corner, which Hal David headed past Raven at the far post.

This goal deflated the visitors confidence and the floodgates started to open.

Three minutes later Dan Richardson turned in the box to hit a shot that Raven could only parry into the path of Brewer, who was left with a simple tap-in from two yards out.

Hugh Howlett then made a welcome return to the starting line-up having missed the last few games through injury. Tom Annear was also given his debut from the bench as he replaced Will Scoley on 66 minutes.

It was Howlett who got the fourth goal though as Cooke and Brewer set him up to hit a powerful shot past Raven from inside the box.

At this point every shot Penryn hit seemed to be ending up in the back of the Truro net and this was highlighted when a goalbound Cooke header was diverted by Brewer past the wrong- footed Raven, who was having a miserable afternoon on his return to Kernick.

The scoring was completed two minutes from time with a well-placed shot from inside the area.
