A Helston Community College student represented her country at hockey last weekend – but not as we know it.

Suzy Beddow was in Glasgow with the England under 19 underwater hockey, or also known as Octopush, team to take on Scotland.

Suzy plays for the only team in Cornwall, based at Helston Sports Centre, and has been doing the sport for about a year after being encouraged by her father, who also played the game. She regularly travels to Dawlish to train with the south West juniors.

Players take to pool of play wearing a diving mask, flippers, a snorkel and a water polo cap to provide protection as well as a short stick. The game originated through divers wanting to maintain their fitness during the winter months.

There were five teams competing in last weekend's international fixture, consisting of the Scotland Elite Squad, English Masters (over 32years), GB Elite Squad and the England Under 19 and Scotland U19 teams.

This was a weekend where each team played all the others in the group. The England U19 team came fourth overall, beating the England Masters 5-3.

Suzy Beddow had the opportunity of playing first as a back, then in another match was placed in the forward line.

She said that she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and intends to continue improving her game and hoping that she will be given another chance to represent her country in the future Although Suzy is playing at a standard which has seen her make the national team, she is still keen to improve her ability at holding her breath so she can stay underwater for longer.
