Falmouth 2 Lydney 1

Falmouth hosted Lydney in the second round of the England Hockey Trophy at Penryn on Sunday.

The home team were determined to avenge their league defeat from the previous week, when they were away to Lydney and conceded two goals in the last ten minutes to lose 4-2. However with a couple of core players returning the squad gave a determined performance, making every effort to reverse the scoreline. Lydney piled on the pressure in the first half and struck a fine penalty corner to go 1-0 ahead after fifteen minutes. Player of the match, Sam Bunyan in the Falmouth goal was called upon to make several excellent saves and keep her defence organised with Megan Cookson once again turning in a great performance. Falmouth midfielders Kat Barbery-Red and Clare Hudson worked hard to bring Falmouth back into the game. The Tatlow sisters made some great runs, both outpacing the visiting defence with their speed and Falmouth levelled the score five minutes before the half time interval, as Amy beat the keeper with a well judged shot from Rachel’s pass into the circle.

The half time talk from coach, Nick Tomalin, gave Falmouth the motivation to succeed and they had a good spell of possession and a couple of near misses as Amy Tatlow and Vic Rushton both hit the post. Falmouth soon reaped the reward as Vic Rushton hit the winning goal after Kat Barbery-Red crossed the ball from the right. The visitors then had a period of intense attacking play with a string of penalty corners but the defence held out and in the last few minutes Falmouth once again were able to play good possession hockey.

Last Saturday Falmouth played their first round County Knockout Cup match against Caradon 3 at Liskeard and ran out 8-0 winners.

Falmouth III 0 Callington 1

Falmouth’s home friendly match against Callington was a game of missed chances with the Falmouth attack being unable to convert any of their scoring opportunities.

The Falmouth midfield supported by the defence controlled the game and only allowed the visitors a handful of moves into their shooting circle with June Moore in the Falmouth goal having a quiet afternoon. Newcomer Jess Lambert showed good skills to gain player of the match.
