Falmouth Town recorded their fifth straight win in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League to stay in touch with leaders Buckland Athletic.

However, it was far from easy for Town as they faced a battling Liskeard Athletic side at Lux Park, who belied their lowly league position by taking a second-half lead against Alan Carey’s title-chasing side.

The game started well for Falmouth as Dan Green beat the Blues stand-in keeper Stuart Berry on ten minutes, after the central defender was forced into goal following an injury to first-choice shot-stopper Dan Batten prior to kick-off.

The goal came from a swift counter-attacking move as Town broke from an Athletic corner, by hitting a long ball up to Liam Eddy. He ran past two defenders before firing a shot past Berry that was cleared away for a corner.

Green took the corner, which was knocked back to him by Jonny Ludlam.

Thinking quickly, he closed in on goal before hitting a shot, which was adjudged to have crossed the goal-line despite the desperate attempts from Blues defenders to hack the ball clear.

Liskeard hit back and Jason Chapman was forced in to a good low save at the foot of the post from a shot by Chris Maskell.

Then a few minutes later Karl Curtis brought another fine diving save out of Chapman who managed to push the ball clear.

Play remained very even as the wind disrupted many moves by both sides along with the frequent stoppages for offside and petty fouls.

After getting the upper hand as the half progressed, Liskeard equalised five minutes before the interval.

Richard Maddison’s shot hit the crossbar before being put behind for a corner and from Karl Curtis’ kick the ball found Lewis Russell at the far post and he headed into the net from six yards.

The second half saw both sides dealing with the conditions by playing the ball low in order to keep possession. Town’s Jamie Densham was first to go close as he hit a shot across the face of goal, following a Ludlam corner.

However, Liskeard always looked dangerous and almost took the lead when Maddison brought another good save out of Chapman.

It was not long before they were infront though as on 64 minutes Demitri Kanakh played a good ball out to Joe Carey on the right wing who in turn sent in a low cross, which Kanakh fired home from close range as Town’s defence were caught out.

However, a minute later Falmouth were back on level terms when a corner kick was caught in the swirling wind and Berry fumbled the ball which deflected off Matt Drummond and into the net.

Town now started to control the midfield more as Tom Barwell, who had come on to replace Eddy, gave more presence to the middle of the park and helped set up some good chances for Densham and Drummond.

However, Falmouth were still thankful to the alertness of keeper Chapman as he pushed away a Chris Maskell shot after the Blues striker had been played in on goal by Carey.

Town eventually regained the lead after 74 minutes following a Ludlam corner kick, which was met by defender Jamie Dirrane who scored with a powerful header from 10 yards for his first goal for the club.

Things then got worse for Liskeard as Karl Curtis was sent off for a second yellow card offence, ending hopes of another fightback as Town piled on the pressure.

As a result Town added a fourht goal late on as Tom Barwell hit a tremendous 25-yard shot, which flew past Berry and into the back of the net.

This victory means that Liskeard have yet to win against Town since the South West Peninsula League was inaugurated.
