Porthleven were knocked out of the Cornwall Senior Cup at third round stage after they ended up on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller at Gala Parc.

Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division side Liskeard Athletic travelled to the game, on Saturday as favourites. But Port could have eaisly caused an upset playing their part in an eventful first half, that saw six goals hit the back of the net, and then putting in a spirited second-half performance that saw them just fall short of an equalising goal.

Liskeard took the lead after two minutes when a cross from Joe Carey saw Dimitri Kanakh send a header past Richard Pennington from 15 yards out.

Porthleven threatened the visitors goal almost immediatley as Jamie Burr headed an Ed Timmons cross narrowly over. They equalised soon after as a good run and cross from Martyn Moon found Tom Russell, who hammered the ball past Gary Maule.

And after seven minutes Jamie Port’s Thomson picked up the ball 35-yards from goal and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net to put his side in front.

The frantic pace to the game showed no let-up as Liskeard went back on the attack. On nine minutes Port failed to clear a free-kick into the box by Carey, allowing Lewis Russell to level the scores with a header at the back post.

Chris Strike then cleared a Carey corner off the goal-line, before Richard Maddison crossed for Kanakh to head them back in front with only 12 minutes played.

Five minutes later Port almost equalised again as Maule picked up a back pass in his area. However Burr’s driven shot was well blocked and then Thomson put the rebound over.

Liskeard managed to get some breathing space ten minutes before the interval as Pennington needlessly pushed Andy Bowker over in the penalty box - allowing the expierenced former Falmouth Town manager to score from the spot.

However, Port made their intentions clear early in the second half as first Tom Russell had a header well-saved by Maule and then Ashley Stidwell saw a deflected shot go narrowly over the crossbar.

Substitute Mikey Davies then tested Maule with a turn and shot from the edge of the area, before Port finally pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining.

A long ball up field found Matt Fox, who turned and volleyed a shot into the corner of the net for 4-3.

Dominic Batchelor then went close to an equaliser minutes later, but saw his shot well-saved by Maule.

The Liskeard keeper then appeared to foul Davies in the box moments later, but the referee waved play on to the annoyance of the home crowd.

Port will be away this Saturday when they take on Dobwalls at Lantoom Park.
