PENRYN ATHLETIC 4 NEWQUAY 2

PENRYN Athletic bounced back from their opening day Carlsberg SWL defeat to pull off a well-deserved 4-2 win against Newquay.

Smarting from their setback at Launceston, this was a much-improved performance with manager Dave Jenkin reshaping his defence.

Athletic looked sharp and took the lead in the 11th minute when sustained pressure saw James Miller get to the by-line and cross for Dale Band to coolly step across two defenders before scoring from five yards.

Newquay levelled the scores in the 25th minute with a stunning goal. Ollie Deadman won possession and set Mike Davies off on a run and from his perfectly flighted cross John Allen headed home to finish off a great move.

Newquay's joy was shortlived and two minutes later Athletic were back in front when Miller's free kick was met by Matt Drummond whose powerful header high inside the near post gave goalkeeper Scott Palmer no chance.

The Peppermints struggled to contain a vibrant Athletic as Deadman and John Winter were both booked.

Just before half time Band raced on to a pass from Miller and after beating Winter again threaded the ball along the line for Drummond to score despite the efforts of Bradley Ralph to keep the ball out of the goal.

The second half began in a thundery downpour and on the hour both sides started to make substitutions.

Athletic continued to carve out chances but Drummond, Richard Young and Miller were unable to make them count.

Five minutes from time Newquay appeared to be harshly penalised for handball in the box, but Drummond showed no mercy by nonchalantly clipping the ball into the net for Athletic's fourth goal and his hat-trick.

However, Newquay showed they had plenty of resilience and grabbed a second goal when Davies was sent racing away and scored inside the far post after cutting in.

Tonight Athletic are home to St Austell and on Saturday they are back on their travels when they visit Torpoint AthleticL. The Tamarside club have had a mixed run of results, drawing and losing before beating Goonhavern on Saturday.
