Porthleven FC fell to their third defeat of the season as they were beaten at home by Truro City Reserves.

Truro’s new signing Patrick Shaughnessy was the main thorn in Porthleven’s side as he scored one goal and set up another in a 3-2 win.

For Porthleven the defeat highlights a poor start to the campaign which has seen them lose all three of their home games at Gala Parc and only record one win against struggling Mousehole on August 24.

The game started well for the home side as good work from skipper Jamie Thomson, after five minutes, presented Robbie Robinson with the chance to volley home his first goal of the season past a stranded Luke Payne.

However, Port have struggled to defend set pieces well so far this campaign and were soon pegged back on 20 minutes.

The equaliser came from a free-kick by Mike Vanes, which floated towards the back post where an unmarked James Rhead headed past Paul Williams at the back post.

Port hit back with Thomson firing just wide and then Robinson hitting a shot straight at Payne, when well placed six yards out. However, former Penryn Athletic striker, Shaughnessy then took control of the match.

In his usual one-man approach he picked up the ball inside the Porthleven half before dribbling the ball past two Porthleven players, twisting in the box and hitting a shot off the inside of the post.

Three minutes later Shaughnessy then hit a tremendous 40-yard cross-field pass to play Sean Johnston in on the right, who hit a shot from the edge of the area, which was deflected past Williams by Scott Palmer.

The second half began with Robinson having another shot blocked after Ed Timmons and Dominic Batchelor had played him in on goal.

Port created the better chances after the break and were back in the match as Robinson played a ball into Searle, who blasted a shot into the back of the net.

However, despite late attempts on goal by Fred Williams and Timmons, Porthleven could not find the equaliser.
