The Falmouth Under-18s Ladies Hockey team were celebrating on Sunday as they collected the County title at Penair on Sunday.

Although four teams had entered the tournament the competition on the day was between Falmouth and Truro. Penzance were unable to field a team and although St Austell still attended they needed to borrow players so were not eligible to win the cup.

Falmouth started strongly against Truro and had the better of the early part of the game. Truro looked dangerous on the break, but they never put in a shot that troubled Falmouth keeper Hannah Bowman. Falmouth defenders Philippa Eddy and Olivia James played very maturely, both showing great composure on the ball and putting through some excellent balls to the midfield and attack whilst also trying to support the less experienced members of the team. After several scoring chances went begging Falmouth managed to score when Emily Gusterson pushed the ball into goal from close range after a goal mouth scramble. The score remained at 1-0 to Falmouth at half time.

In the second half Falmouth captain, Hannah Whear, led by example as she worked tirelessly at right midfield to put Falmouth further ahead. Hannah made some good passes to right wing, Gusterson, who beat several players to put in crosses that worried the Truro defence, but the final shot was always well saved by the Truro keeper. The whole team worked well together and had by far the greater possession but they were unable to find the final shot to beat the defence again and the score remained at 1-0 but this was enough to claim the county title.

In the other two matches Falmouth drew 1-1 with St Austell (including four Truro players) and St Austell (including four Falmouth players) beat Truro 1-0.
