Victory for Issy Steele and Colin Snook in Stithians 5k run

One hundred and thirty runners lined up at Stithians Showground last week for the launch of the 2012 Duchy Athletic Network 5K Series.

Tony Brewer (Mile High) stormed into an early lead, with the Mile High and Cornwall AC runners featuring prominently in the chasing group. A determined Brewer held his clear advantage until the second of the three laps, when Colin Snook (Cornwall AC) began to close the gap moving past the Mile High runner on the final circuit, finishing strongly to win by a comfortable 21 second margin.

Brewer was clear in second place, with the third spot up for grabs as a group of five, running together from the first lap, prepared for the final showdown. With the finish line in sight, comeback king Dan Simons (Cornwall AC eased ahead in of his immediate pursuers, with team mate Steve Wherry (fourth) running a blinder and taking a few notable scalps in the process, crossing the line one second clear of both Mile High’s Andrew Martin (fifth) and sixth-placed Neil Eddy (Mounts Bay Harriers), with another Cornwall AC runner, Ceri Whitmore, very close behind in seventh position.

The Ladies race was a much more clear cut affair with sixteen-year-old Issy Steele (Falmouth Road Runners) hitting the front from the gun, extending her lead lap after lap, to win by one and a half minutes, running forty six seconds faster than last year. The real scrap was for second place with three ladies, Alice Nicholas (Mounts Bay Harriers), Stephanie Martin (Newquay Road Runners) and Beth Popperwell (Mile High), battling it out in the clsosing stages. Beth was the first to lose contact, as Alice and Stephanie sprinted neck and neck for the line with the Mounts Bay Harrier edging ahead and finishing two seconds ahead of the Newquay runner.

The second race in the DAN 5K Series will be the Hayle Beach Run, hosted by Hayle Runners on Tuesday, June 12. Registration will be at the Hayle Surf Life Saving Club, opening at 6pm, with the start scheduled for 7pm. Runners are reminded that a minimum of three of the five races must be completed to qualify for series memento.
