Porthleven Football Club is in mourning following the news that their popular and well-respected groundsman, Jack Prowse has died, aged 82.

Jack, who started looking after the club’s Gala Parc pitch two seasons ago, died on Sunday following a long battle with cancer.

Tributes have poured in quickly from football clubs across the region, including Wendron United where Jack was also a long-serving groundsman and president.

Porthleven secretary Vidal James, described how Jack was a dedicated member of the groundstaff at the club, working tirelessly with Derek Richards to keep the playing surface immaculate.

He described how Jack’s knowledge and dedication to Porthleven AFC would be sorely missed.

“He was highly regarded by everyone at the club,” said Vidal, who explained how Jack would travel to as many away games as he could, missing only the last three games of last season due to ill health.

“He had so much knowledge about the game and was an excellent groundsman," added Vidal. “He was always down at Gala Parc every week looking after the pitch. He will be irreplaceable.”
