After months of preparation the Teddington Solar 2012 Cornish Cricket Festival will be under way next week, welcoming some of the country’s finest sporting talent to Cornwall.
Being staged by the Cornish Sporting Club the event’s two major professional matches will take place on July 5 and 8.
The first international cricket match ever to be held in Cornwall will see the NatWest Women’s One Day International - England v India played in Malpas at the Truro Cricket Club on Sunday July 8, starting at 10.45am.
The game will be preceded three days earlier by the Men’s Twenty 20 Challenge match – Cornwall v PCA Masters Eleven, starting at 5pm.
Cornwall captain, Tom Sharp, said: “It’s great for amateur teams to pit themselves against the professionals and many of us have grown up watching these players, so it’s an honour and privilege to play against them.”
The England Women’s team is currently the world number one side and ICC Women’s World Cup champions, whilst India women are ranked number three in the world in 50 over cricket.
England Women’s captain, Charlotte Edwards, said: "I’m looking forward to playing the fourth match of the NatWest Women’s Series against India as part of the Cornish Cricket Festival; it’s fantastic for women’s cricket to be showcased in the county.”
To ensure that the festival offers something for the whole family, the Cornish Sporting Club has arranged for the Searchlight Theatre Company to entertain the crowds in between play for the international match.
Alan George, from the Cornish Sporting Club, said: “With the addition of the Searchlight Theatre Company we think the Teddington Solar 2012 Cornish Cricket Festival will be a complete day out for families.
“After months of planning it is really exciting to think that festival will soon be played out. It’s been a lot of hard work, but great fun, and we’re now hoping that the sun will come out and shine for us.”
A star studded sporting dinner is also being held on July 6, with special guests including former England Rugby Union captain and Leicester Tigers Legend Lewis Moody; along with the former Premiership Football Manager, Alan Curbishley.
