Helston Athletic boss disappointed by Penzance failure to raise a team
Helston Athletic boss Sid Taylor has said he was disappointed by Penzance AFC decision to cancel their match in the Dave Gardner Memorial Tournament.
The Magpies were unable to raise a side for the charity match last Friday and cancelled the game.
Since then Helston have beaten Porthleven 6-0 in the same competition, while Penzance lost their midweek match to Falmouth 9-1.
Penzance have lost a lot of players over the summer after the departure of first team boss Gary Marks at the end of last season and have had trouble recruiting new players.
However, Taylor was left disappointed saying the cancellation disrupted their pre-season.
“I was disappointed that the game was cancelled and disappointed that Penzance couldn’t raise a team, said Taylor. “It’s a big charity match and for a big club like Penzance to cancel at such short notice is a bit of a shame. It has impacted on our pre-season schedule a bit but instead of playing the game the lads played a five-a-side match.”
The Dave Gardner Memorial Torunament his held annual each year in memory of Dave Gardner, a footballer who played for Falmouth, Penzance, Helston and Porthleven who died of cancer in his mid thirties.
The competition concludes on Saturday as Penzance face Porthleven, at 3pm, and Falmouth play Helston at 5pm. Both games are due to be played at Bickland Park.
