HELSTON Athletic manager Sid Taylor said he was ‘delighted’ to have won the Dave Gardner Memorial Trophy for the first time in the club’s history on Saturday.
The trophy is a pre-season tournament played between Falmouth Town, Helston, Porthleven and Penzance to remember Dave Gardner a footballer who played for all four of the teams before dying from cancer in his mid-thirties.
Helston regularly go into the tournament as the underdogs, but following an upturn in form over the past two years they entered this summer’s event as favourites.
Taylor added that the victory was great for the club.
“It means a lot, because when you are playing against three difficult teams to beat, the tournament is very good,” he said.
“As years have gone by it has been difficult for Helston to get anything out of it because they have been the lowest club in the tournament. As we have progressed and got into the south west peninsula league it is great that we have competed and now actually won it. It is great for the club to show, we are heading in the right direction.”
