Despite heavy rain more than 200 runners turned up for the Trelissick 10K run, round eight of the Cornwall Multi Terrain Race Series.
The steep uphill and downhill sections of the first mile soon stretched the field, with five runners detaching themselves early on in the men's race, led by James Waldie (Cornwall AC) and Tony Brewer (Mile High), with Ben Price (Cheltenham), Andrew Martin (Mile High) and Stuart Ansell (Oxford) in hot pursuit.
Waldie, a fell running specialist who recently won the season's fifth race of the Scottish Hill Running Championships, was content to run alongside Brewer until the two mile point, before moving clear of the Mile High man on one of the many uphill sections. He eventually crossed the line almost three minutes ahead of Brewer, who had settled for second before the half way point.
Price, who knows the area well having organised the first few 10K off road races at Trelissick a few years ago, finished third, ahead of Martin, with Stuart Nicholas (St Austell Running Club) moving through, after a more sensible start than most, crossing the line in sixth position.
The Ladies race was won by Jasmine Finney (Bude Rats), who led from the start and was delighted to win her second Multi Terrain Series race of the summer, having triumphed in her club's own race, the Bude Lifeboat Run in June.
Jasmine finished 40 seconds ahead of eighteen year old Zoe Barber (Westbury Harriers, Bristol), who was racing over 10K for the first time and coped extremely well with this very demanding course.
Youth certainly prevailed at Trelissick, with the top two youngsters leading a procession of no less than 16 lady Veteran runners, with Revis Crowle (East Cornwall Harriers) leading the more Senior runners home in third place.
In the team competition, St Austell Running Club were clear winners in the Men's race, ahead of Falmouth Road Runners (second) and Cornwall AC (third).
The Ladies team competition was a much closer affair, with East Cornwall Harriers beating another club from the east of the county, Bude Rats, by just four points, with Falmouth Road Runners a third and just one point in front of St Austell Running Club.
