Helston Athletic’s manager Sid Taylor praised his side’s focus and work-rate as they beat Hayle to put last weekend’s disappointing loss to Godolphin behind them.
Helston fell to their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 5-1 away at Godolphin on Saturday, September 8. It was a defeat that annoyed Taylor and he called on his players to re-focus ahead of a tough match at home to Hayle.
And they did just that scoring four second half goals to take a 4-0 win.
Taylor said that for two sides targeting promotion from the Carlsberg SW Peninsula League division one west, it was a ‘must win’ game for Hayle and Helston.
And he was delighted his side had come out on top.
“I asked them for a reaction and I was delighted,” said Taylor.
“We made a few changes this week and the players worked hard in the two training sessions.
“I said to the players that you have to put in the effort and work hard before you can play football and I felt we did that. I felt we wore Hayle down in the end.”
The result didn’t see Helston close the five-point gap on league leaders Godolphin as the north coast side picked up their seventh straight victory.
However, despite Godolphin having failed to drop a point so far this season, Taylor is not concerned despite the club needing to finish as champions to guarantee promotion.
“We have gone five points behind them in the table, so we have made it difficult for ourselves,” added Taylor.
But they are a lot of good sides in this league and people will take points off each other. Hayle will come back strong and Callington are a good side as well, so points will be dropped
everywhere.”
