Hockey: Falmouth Ladies win close derby match against Newquay

Falmouth 3 Newquay 2

Falmouth came out on top in this closely contested game between the top two ladies teams in Cornwall.

Since Falmouth elected to drop a league, as after five years the travelling in West Premier II became too big a problem in terms of finance and time, Newquay are the counties only representatives at that level.

Falmouth took the lead in the first half and made it 2-0 before half time.
In the second half Newquay scored two goals to even the score, but Falmouth managed to regain the lead to take the honours in this pre-season friendly.

Falmouth: Sam Bunyan, Meg Cookson, Philippa Eddy, Danny Burnford, Terri Barbery-Redd, Kat Barbery-Redd, Emily Dunstan, Hannah Whear, Clare Hudson, Nicola Smith, Sam Dunstan, Rachael Tatlow.

Falmouth II 0 Duchy 7

Falmouth were beaten in this match by a much more experienced Duchy team.

However, Falmouth stuck to their task and there were a lot of positives to take away from the match.

Rosie Hawkins in her debut for Falmouth, made a strong start but was injured in the first half and was unable to continue.
June Moore, in the Falmouth goal had a very busy afternoon, especially in the second half but she made a good number of excellent saves as the Duchy attack found their mark. Most of the players were from last season’s third team.

Falmouth II: June Moore, Rosie Hawkins, Amy Figgins, Lori Kaack, Sonia Wilcox, Sophie Clarke, Emily Gusterson, Polly Morris, Bella Corbridge, Rachel Medd, India Rogers

Falmouth III 4 Bodmin 10

Falmouth were really pleased to get on the score sheet in this preliminary round of the County Cup as they were drawn against a team who gained promotion out of their league at the end of last season.

Bodmin had some quick forwards who passed the ball well to score well-worked goals.  Hannah Bowman made some excellent saves and the goals from Imogen Penry(2), Molly Phillips and Lucy Phillips are encouraging for this development squad.

Falmouth III: Hannah Bowman, Kate Penry, Katie Alizadeh, Jeanette Coleman, Christine Bradley, Lucy Phillips, Imogen Penry, Molly Phillips, Vickie Wagstaff.

Next week all three teams start their league matches.
Falmouth start their West Area South League matches with a trip to Stonehouse Barracks to play Mannamead at 10.30am while Mannamead II travel to play Falmouth II at Penryn College at 1.30pm.
Falmouth III entertain Caradon II at Penryn at 12pm.  Falmouth Hockey Club thanked 'The Space', thespacepenryn@googlemail.com, for the use of their facilities for post match refreshments.
