Redruth RBL stung by Illogan

Illogan RBL have the honour of being the first team to sit at the top of the table in the Jolly's Camborne-Redruth Premier Pool League as they kicked off the summer season with an emphatic 9-2 win over Redruth RBL Wasps, the win was all the more remarkable considering they were trailing 2-1 early-on before winning all of the remaining eight frames to come out on top.

Winners on the night for the Illogan side were Chris Paton, Russell May, Paul Metcalfe, Nigel Pengelly, Matt Roach and captain Sue Metcalfe, with the Wasps’ two frames coming from Justin Sowerby and Michael Ellis.

The White Hart Bulls lie in second spot after overcoming the Lounge Bar Leopards 8-3. Honours were equal in the singles as both teams won three frames but thedifference was in the doubles and trebles as the home side won all five, the highlight being an eight ball clearance from the break by the pairing of Dave Elliott and Simon O’Mahony.

Although defeated, there were some great individual wins for the Leopards as Dave Matthews got the better of Alex Lane, Linda Matthew defeated Elliott and Ron Davies used all his experience to beat O’Mahony. For the Bulls, Paul Murphy, Richard Ash and Lewis Saundry all recorded three wins out of three. Paul Gee’s Redruth RBL Demons caused the first upset of the campaign as they staged a great fightback to beat last season’s runners-up, Redruth RBL Sharks 6-5. The Sharks looked to be coasting to a comfortable win as Jeremy Hooper, Phil Lane and Andrew Cowper all won to put them 3-0 up.

However Marcus Tresidder stopped the rot for the Demons with a fine win over Rob Charman before team-mates Mark Moyle and Coran Heard followed up with wins over Liam Blenes and Troy Lynes respectively to tie the match at 3-3 after the singles. The start of the doubles continued where the singles left of as Jo McGuire and Jamie Edwards teamed up for the Demons to put them ahead for the first time in the match at 4-3. The game then became tied at 5-5 so the final triples frame of the night became a tense decider. With both teams showing signs of nerves, Sharks’ Blenes was left with a tricky black down the rail to win the match but it wasn’t to be as he narrowly missed and the Demons made him pay the ultimate price.

Having seen their pub close down, defending champions the Red Jackets Eagles have upped sticks and are now the Spice of Life Eagles. They started the defence of their title against the newly formed Spice of Life Aces. The Eagles were on course to draw first blood as Andy Jory looked in a commanding position to win the first frame before an attempted double ended with the black being potted prematurely to give Aces’ Martyn Tonkin the frame. Dave Metcalfe tied the match up and Adam Clift won to put the Eagles 2-1 ahead. The Aces weren’t going to rollover though and Gareth Rogers and then Brett Adams recorded victories to put them back infront at 3-2. Two further wins for the Eagles in the doubles session put them 5-4 ahead, leaving them just needing one of the two triples frames to clinch the match and the bonus point which they duly did as Jory, Clift and Ball teamed up to move the score on to 6-4.

Aces’ Fulcher, Mark Rolling and Martin Adams restored some pride for their team as they clinched the last frame of night to make the final score 6-5 to the Eagles.

In the other match, Grenville Arms were involved in a close game as they travelled to the Lounge Bar and got the better of the Lions by a 6-5 scoreline.
