A DOUBLE was completed by Penryn Saracens on Saturday as they recorded their second victory over Pirates Amateurs this season.

On October 18, Saracens welcomed the Pirates to the Memorial Ground and ran out 34-19 victors.

They played host again to the Penzance-based side for a rematch and endured a tighter affair this time round, but still came out on top with a 35-29 score.

With the previous game fresh in their minds, the Pirates put plenty of pressure on Saracens as they attacked from the off.

However, an excellent turnover from the home backs followed by a brilliant kick for possession by fly-half Bill Benton turned the tables.

This created a flamboyant sequence of sidesteps in a play from winger Jake Bailey to open the scoring with a try.

Will Paine soon added to the tally less than a minute later with a crash ball straight through the middle breaking Pirates’ defence.

A response was put in though by the visitors as they looked to barge through Saracens’ line.

Tempers began to fray on both sides resulting in home flanker Phil Hinchley being sin-binned along with an away player before the Pirates finally broke through the hard hitting Saracens defence to grab a try.

But Saracens were quick to stretch the lead again as from the restart, they managed to gather the ball and the fast reactions and split second reaction from scrum-half Chris Hellier saw him sold a dummy to give him space to dot down.

Before the half was up, ill-discipline rippled through the hosts which allowed the Pirates to score two tries ahead of the interval.

After the break, Penryn gained a second wind and re-awoke as Paine dashed over the line to score his second try of the game.

Almost immediately the Pirates got a try back, but Saracens started to control the momentum and majority of the play.

A poor punt by the visitors was latched upon by the ‘Bahaman Bullet’ Dan Woodside who proceeded to fight his way through the defence to get the final score of the day for Penryn, with Benton adding the conversion to maintain his 100 per cent record in the game.

Despite scoring a try in the final few moments of the match, the Pirates could not close the gap to more than six points.
