HELSTON hold on to fifth spot in County Division One after a resounding 83 run win over Ludgvan at Beacon Park on Saturday.

It might well have been a much bigger margin as at one stage Ludgvan, needing 296 to win, were in all sorts of trouble at 56-6. In the Helston innings Dan Jenkin had a rare failure when he was dismissed by Nathan Pobega for 11.

Alex Kill made 39 but his dismissal at 52 signalled a mini collapse. Ben Rule and Mark Thomas both fell to Damon Nicholls for ducks.

At 62-4, the innings was really in the balance.

But Chris Martin, who made 38, and Steve Jenkin, with 65 runs, added a valuable 86 for the fifth wicket to get the home side back on track. Jenkin hit eleven boundaries off 60 balls.

Ahead of his West of England ESCA Bunbury Under 15 Festival appearances this week, at Oakham School in the Midlands, Tommy Sturgess made 38 off 33 balls and Josh Ninnis hit 56 not out down the order, including a six and six fours. Pobega took three for 47 and Nicholls two for 50.

After reaching 30 without loss Ludgvan were reduced to 56-6 before Ryan Edwards, with 79, and Josh Stevens, who scored 65, staged a recovery putting on 116 for the seventh wicket.

Tom Retallack, who finished with figures of three for 27, and Jordan Fulton, who picked up three wickets for 22 runs, did the initial damage with Dan Jenkin and Kill also taking two each.

Helston make the short trip to ninth placed Beacon on Saturday.
