TRURO City put in a good showing against League One side Yeovil Town on Saturday as they were defeated 2-1.

First half goals from Simon Gillett and ex-City striker Keiffer Moore in between a score from Issac Vassell for the White Tigers were the difference at Treyew Road.

The professional side, who were relegated from the Championship last season, went in front after 20 minutes when Gillett picked up the ball on the edge of the area before shooting low past the goalkeeper Mike Searle.

However, it took just four minutes for the Southern Premier League side to equalise as Vassell nodded home a rebound after Yeovil’s keeper Artur Krysiak had stopped a Cody Cooke shot.

This goal came just after City captain Dan Green had to make a last ditch clearance off the line from Aaron Martin’s header.

Town did regain the lead though on the half hour mark when Moore got his head to the ball just two yards out from goal, with his effort just going past Searle.

The lead nearly became 3-1 five minutes later when Moore again rose high, only to send his header crashing onto the cross bar.

His team-mate Ajay Leitch-Smith did poke the ball in the net from a rebound, but by this point the linesman’s flag had been raised for offside.

Another chance fell to Leitch-Smith in the second half when he took a penalty after Sam Foley was fouled by Rob Farkin in the box.

But he failed to convert his spot kick as substitute goalkeeper Kyle Moore saved with his feet in the 65th minute.

City struggled to create chances in the second half, with their best opportunity coming from the head of Arran Pugh, whose effort went wide from Les Afful’s cross.

On Saturday, City begin their 2014/15 league campaign at home to Chesham United. Kick-off is at 3pm.
