Falmouth left Roskear on Saturday breathing a little easier after claiming a vital win in their bid to avoid relegation from the Jolly Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League.

It proved to be a profitable day with the other teams in trouble all losing. Redruth had Grampound Road in trouble at 104 for eight but the visitors recovered to win by the large margin of 82 runs.

Callington also only picked up a handful of points thanks to a 158 run defeat at Truro. Newquay had a bad day being dismissed at Werrington for a record low score of 14. Alex Smeeth sensationally taking nine wickets for ten runs in an innings that only last 41 balls.

On Monday the forecast heavy rain duly arrived in the morning and Falmouth’s home game with Truro was an early cancellation.

The rest of the Premier League was also washed out with the exception of the Newquay v Redruth basement battle. Understandably Redruth were keen to play and proceedings got underway at 4pm.

The game wasn’t completed due to further rain but Redruth did take nine points. They now have 133 points, the same as Camborne but move above them, having beaten them twice which is the first criteria when teams are level on points.

Callington are only two points better off. It all means Falmouth are 14 points clear of danger with two games to play.

With Redruth having the top two to play that might already be just about enough. Should victory be gained at Callington on Saturday however then surely survival will be achieved.

It’s thanks to a great effort in the field at Camborne after making full use of a useful toss.

Glyn Furnival and Antony Angove bowled fine opening spells as the home side were reduced to 37 for four in the 21st over. Then Arup Revandkar got in on the act taking four for 14. Matt Rowe (15) was the only home player to get into double figures in a disappointing display with the bat.

The last six wickets fell for just 13 runs, in eight overs, with Angove returning to take three for 23. Furnival took two for 14 from nine tight overs.

Falmouth cruised home in the 23rd over with Revandkar completing a good game with 25 not out. The openers Mark Johnson and Adrian Noott made 16 apiece as they put on 34 for the first wicket. Rowe took three for 21.

It was Camborne fourth straight defeat in which time they have only picked up eleven bonus points to leave themselves in trouble. Falmouth meanwhile have now won two crucial away games at Redruth and Camborne.
