HELSTON got back to winning ways on the road at Menheniot on Saturday, writes Michael Weeks.

Already relegated Menheniot Looe posted a useful total of 211-8 from their full 50 overs.

Philip Blanchard made 29 and Jake Trethowan 25, but it was an unbroken ninth wicket partnership that boosted the innings.

Robin Trethowan ended on 57 not out and Ed Facey made 22 not out to see the total past the 200 mark. Jordan Fulton took four for 29 and Tommy Sturgess three for 25.

All rounder Sturgess then made 64 in the Helston response before another youngster, Ross Leathley, secured the win with an unbeaten 57.

The best that Helston can hope for is a third placed finish as Hayle are guaranteed second following their nine wicket win over Stithians on Saturday.

Helston need eight points from their final game to ensure finishing above Roche.

It will not be an easy task however as the opponents are the new champions, Penzance, who only needed three points against Beacon at St Clare to seal the title.

They did not win the game however as Beacon were all out for 201 and Penzance pulled up three runs short.

Before Saturday’s game at Beacon Park, league chairman Vic Hassell and secretary Mike Evans are due to make the trophy presentation to Penzance at 12.30pm.

Helston will be hoping that next year this time it might be their turn.
