CAMBORNE left it late before sealing a five try win against a Clevedon side who contested well throughout, perhaps deserving to have left the Recreation Ground with at least a losing bonus point.

The victory sees Town move into fifth spot in the early season South West One table having played two of the teams above them.

On a fine afternoon, the Cherry and Whites made three changes to their line up with Adam Lewarne getting his full debut at lock in place of the suspended Ben Kemp, while Cameron Bone started on the flank and James Briant came in on the wing.

On the coaching team for the visitors was Cornishman Kevin Instance who had a season as a Camborne Colt some 30 years ago.

Playing down the slope, the visitors took an early lead with a well judged Mike Taylor penalty which the Cherry and Whites soon answered through a straight forward sixth minute David Mankee effort.

Midway through the half, Town went through several phases of attack with prop Malcolm Hearn prominent before Ben Drew did well to break the Clevedon cover finally finding Grant Thirlby on a good angle who touched down under the crossbar. Fly half Mankee easily added the extras as he would do again soon after when home scrum half Taron Peacock scorched 50 metres on a superb blindside break swerving inside to score at the posts.

Camborne could not press on from their 17-3 advantage and on the half time whistle the visitors cut the deficit when their burly pack rumbled over from a line-out catch and drive with centre Taylor stroking over the conversion.

Though Town had the advantage of the slope after the break the third quarter ended pointless with Clevedon on top and eventually they closed the gap further with a superb Taylor penalty.

On 64 minutes the deficit was cut to a single point as Taylor landed another 40 metre attempt.

Going into the last ten minutes following a line-out in front of the grandstand, man-of-the-match Peacock sniped down the blindside again this time on a 30 metre run to touchdown at the corner flag.

Soon after the home side sealed their bonus point as centre Drew showed pace and power to breach the defence and dot down with Mankee converting for a 29-16 scoreline.

In stoppage time the spirited visitors hammered the home goal line until another forward was driven over wide out with the immaculate boot of Taylor improving the try from the touchline.

Leading 29-23 there was still time for Camborne to fashion an excellent final try with wing Joe Parma stretching to gather a pass and neatly feed on to full back Thirlby who with plenty to do did well to squeeze over in the scoreboard corner.
