Redruth showed great spirit to get two converted tries in the final ten minutes to bring a well deserved bonus point home from the long trip to Cambridge, writes Alan Nettle.

Dean Bonds and Jess Tompsett both made their first starts of the season for the Reds.

In their first attack, luck favoured the hosts when they overthrew at a line out but prop Tom Jones reacted fastest as the ball fell on the Reds side and flanker Kennet O’Neill was able to dive over for an unconverted try.

With the interval a couple of minutes away, Cambridge were awarded a penalty try when a scrum disintegrated close to the Reds line.

Cambridge opened the second half strongly as a penalty enabled them to take play to the Reds line. A series of strong drives ended with hooker Ean Griffiths going over.

The bonus point try came after 62 minutes from a Redruth handling error as they tried to run from their own ten metre line and Albert Portsmouth was able to run in an easy try near the posts to open up an 18 point gap.

With the game going away from them, the Reds did not lie down and a strong run from Tom Notman took play into the right hand corner before the ball was worked back inside for Hosking to have an easy stroll over.

From a quickly taken penalty Hosking looked to run out of the reds half but was injured when tackled.

After a long stoppage replacement Gerhard Boshoff kicked a penalty from to make the game safe for Cambridge with four minutes to go.

In an exciting few minutes Sam Parsons helped McAtee find space for a 60 metre run down the left, ending with Neilson Webber racing over for a try near the posts.

From the restart good play from Kyle Marriott ensured that Redruth gave it a go as Robin Wedlake put in a good run wide out on the left before being pushed into touch in the Cambridge half as the final whistle went on an entertaining game.
