A GOOD start to the league season was provided by Falmouth Hockey Club’s ladies team on Saturday as they thumped Newquay 5-1.

The game at Penryn College had a high tempo and saw tempers flare up too with Kat Barbery-Redd for Falmouth and Newquay’s Louise Edwards both going into the umpires book for dissent in the first half.

Sam Dunstan opened the scoring towards the end of the half and shortly after the break doubled the lead as Miriana Tumoana deftly flicked the ball into the net.

Not long after this, Rachael Tatlow added a third with a fine solo effort rounding visiting goalkeeper Mandy Peters to score.

A penalty corner gave Newquay their only goal of the match as Helen Stubbs smashed the ball home, but a clever deflection by Tatlow increased Falmouth’s lead again.

Their fifth came from Dunstan as she got on the end of a pinpoint cross from Hanna Royle.

FALMOUTH Hockey Club’s ladies second team got off to a winning start to the league season as they defeated Newquay’s second team 3-2.

The match at Penair School began well for Falmouth as after only five minutes Emma Bragg ran down the right wing before sending in a cross which found team-mate Gill Lister, who sent a shot past the goalkeeper.

Falmouth piled the pressure on the defence and another move down the right by Bragg saw her get a goal herself in the 15th minute.

Newquay started to fight back as the first half went on, but they found June Moore in fine form in the goal with outstanding saves being made by her to keep it at 2-0 at the break.

Shortly after the interval, it became 3-0 to Falmouth when Bragg sped up the pitch to send another cross in which received a deflection off Lister’s stick to send it in.

Inside the final ten minutes, Newquay scored twice to set up an entertaining finish, but the leaders held on to claim three points.
