FALMOUTH Golf club came away very satisfied with their performance at the prestigious Maxam Cup played over 36 holes at West Cornwall on Sunday.

With Cornwall being crowned English Champions for the first time a week previously and many of those players were present representing their respective clubs, it was always going to be a tough ask to get among the top sides.

Falmouth, who blooded some juniors, did themselves proud by finishing a creditable eighth out of the 16 clubs who took part and will no doubt benefit from the experience of playing alongside the best players in the county.

The competition is played with three sets of foursomes off scratch with two of the three best scores counting.

The winners were Tehidy Park with an overall aggregate of 285 gross while host club West Cornwall also came in with 285, only to lose out on the third card countback rule.

Third place went to Trevose thanks to a strong rounds in the afternoon by duos Mike Reynard and Lee Cunningham along with Nick Gammon and Ben Westgate.

Perranporth and Truro had to settle for fourth and fifth places respectively after having made strong starts to the competition, but each dropped off the lead.
