THE AUTUMN Open attracted another large entry at Falmouth Golf Club last week, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The competition was considerably spiced up when Angus MacArthur requested the On Course Foundation bring two injured personnel along.

Falmouth Director of Golf Steve Burrows readily agreed and with his expertise and trusted band of helpers made the day a great success including obtaining numerous generous sponsors.

These included Falmouth Golf Club, The Boathouse in Falmouth, West Cornwall Golf Club, The Cove in Maenporth, The Ferryboat Inn in Helford Passage, The Red Lion in Mawnan Smith, St. Michaels Hotel, MS Electrical, Nick Rogers Golf Pro, National Trust, Glendurgan, Screwfix and On Course Foundation.

The winners were the triumvirate of Gerry Storey, Gary Muchan and Bob Aggus with a terrific score of 90 points which left the rest of the field trailing in their considerable wake.

Runners-up were Robert Tongue. Roger Weeks and Ian Renshaw with 83 points while third went to Andy McKnight. Mark Richards and Crispin Merritt with 79 and fourth were Colin Ross. Andy Morris and Tony Drew, also with 79 points.

Best Visitors were Dave Norwood, Clive Bicknell and Nigel Dunstan from Newquay with 76 points.

Nearest the pins were won by Phil Jones on the fifth hole and Greg Phillips the 11th.

The amount raised for the recovery of injured service personnel and veterans was £600.

On Saturday, the opening round of the Winter League saw some great scoring in the four ball better ball format.

Mathew Morrison and Steve Thomas led the way with a 45 point haul with their 22 points on the back nine.

This was just good enough to pip Richie Perrin and Simon Kearsley, who finished second with a back nine of 21 on countback.

Third were Connor Davidson and Steve Draycott with 44 points (21 and 23) and fourth were Tony Annear and Charlie Scorse with 43 points (18 and 25).

This Saturday is the Greenkeepers Shotgun start 9.30am.
