DURING a weekend where football teams where slipping on FA Cup banana skins, Kernow Volleyball Club pulled off a shock themselves in their sport.

The Truro-based club scored a 3-1 victory in the second round of the National Cup against Tendring, who ply their trade in National Division One, the second highest volleyball league in the country.

Featuring in the Cornish team which travelled all the way to Essex for the game included Helston natives James Moseley, Michael Jenkin and Truan Harris.

It was a tense start from both sides as each probed for weaknesses, but eventually Kernow got on top and starting showing dominance to kill points off while producing a fine defensive display too.

They took the first set 25-15, but the team from the higher division came out fighting in the second to level the match.

Kernow were not dazed by this though and in the next two sets mixed up their offence well, but still had to contend with some tough serves and middle attacks from the hosts.

However, brilliant work at the net by Harris and William Sandall opened up the chances for Kernow in the third which they duly claimed 25-23 before securing the victory in the fourth with a 26-24 score.

Their reward is a match in the next round against London Lynx One, who play in the top Super 8s division.

Luke Richardson, Kernow’s captain, said: “It was an amazing match.

“Everyone pulled together for a superb all round team performance and all my tactical decisions seemed to work.

“The whole team can’t wait now to test ourselves against a top team from the top division.”

The match will be played on November 29 at Truro Leisure Centre.
