THERE has been plenty to talk about in 2014 for readers of the Packet’s sport section.

From new stadiums, huge cricket scores, cup triumphs and defeats, it has certainly been an interesting 12 months.

Here are some of the articles which have been popular with readers in 2014:

Porthleven and Helston Athletic announced they would be playing for the Mayor’s Cup and FE Strike Memorial Trophy for the first time since the 1960s.

In the matches played on Boxing Day, Athletic took home the Mayor’s Cup while Port’s reserves claimed the Memorial Trophy.

Stithians Cricket Club’s first team did not have a lot to shout about in 2014.

Their season included a record breaking defeat at Gorran as the hosts blasted 531 runs against them, including a knock of 235 from Tom Cross.

A more cheerful outfit where rugby league side Cornish Rebels who completed a clean sweep of domestic trophies.

After their Challenge Cup victory in June, chairman John Beach told the Packet how Cornwall was beginning to love the game.

In the union version of the game, it was a topsy-turvy year for lock Ben Trevaskis, pictured below.

He signed for the Cornish Pirates over the summer, but then left not long into his career there due to illness.

However, a few weeks later Trevaskis was back on the rugby pitch.

The Penryn-native rejoined his home town side and is setting his sights on a call-up for the Cornish team.

Falmouth Town had a difficult 2014 and it came to a head in October when manager John Dent, pictured below, resigned.

Speaking to the Packet, he said the supporters were damaging the club with their negative attitude.

In November, Wayne Hughes stepped into the Bickland Park hot seat on a full-time basis after being put in caretaker charge.

The man who had moved up from the reserve team manager’s job said his focus was bringing more quality players to the squad.

A lot has gone on over the last 12 months with the Stadium for Cornwall plans.

In August, Cornish Pirates chairman Ian Connell said if the current idea is not green-lighted, then the club would still look to move to Truro.

Cornwall’s rugby team made another trip to Twickenham for the Bill Beaumont Cup Final.

Sadly for the Duchy, they again came second to Lancashire with the northerners winning 35-26.

In November, the Packet spoke to windsurfing granny Teena Gustafsson.

At 70-years-old, the inspirational Falmouth resident still hits the waters whenever she possible can.
