YOUNG surf life savers from Gyllyngvase are celebrating after securing the Cornish Nippers Stillwater title by the slimmest of margins.

Their team of 61 took part in the competition held over two weekends in Penzance with the overall score for the boys topping their category and the girls finishing second.

When combined, their total of 525 meant they just pipped St Ives to overall glory.

Club coach Matthew Trebilcock said: “We would like to say what a great achievement this is from the Gylly nippers.

“The performances from all members of the team was absolutely outstanding and resulted in our first major championship.

“The competition from the other participating clubs was outstanding and we feel honoured to have lifted the trophy by only a few points from St Ives.

“The team spirit and determination from the Gylly nippers cannot be underestimated and is a remarkable achievement for a club founded only seven years ago.”

During the contest, Gylly won 26 gold medals across the categories along with 29 silver and 14 bronze.

Among the gold medallists for Gylly were Mia Rule who picked up first in the 12-years Flipper Race and Freya Hocking in the 13-year section.

Rule also won her age group’s Manikin Race, while Sam Norton had a top championship as he claimed three golds.

His successes came in 13-years Board Race, 11-13 Manikin Relay and 11-13 Medley Relay.
