TOM Slattery had plenty to celebrate in the final Brooks Westward Cross Country League race of the season at Redruth with his maiden victory.

The Cornwall Athletics Club member who lives in Helston got home first in the Under 17s age group which helped him confirm third place overall in the series of cross country events.

In the U11 Development section, the girls title went to Catherine Groves of Godolphin Cross after the Cornwall AC runner finished level on points with Erme Valley Harriers’ Olivia Travers, but pipped her to victory on the basis she has completed more races.

Falmouth’s James Horton finished as runner-up in the boys U11s with a win and two second places helping him secure silver.

In the veteran categories, there was success for Nick Ratcliffe as the athlete who runs for Penryn’s Mile High club finished third in the 40-44 age category.

Helston’s Karen Harrison came second overall in the 45-49 category after sharing the same points with the third place finisher, but went above her on virtue of having taken part in more races during the series.
