CONCEDING 33 points in the second half saw Redruth crash to their biggest defeat against a very good Dorking side on Saturday, writes Ed Bawden.

The home side ran in seven tries to complete a convincing double over the Reds this season, having won 38-12 when they travelled to the Rec on November 29.

Redruth were left to reflect on the failure to take three good chances in the first half following breaks by Rhodri McAtee, Neilson Webber and Greg Goodfellow and the failure to take a score from two good opportunities early in the second.

As the game wore on the Reds’ forwards without the powerhouse Damien Cook were overrun and the home backs moved the ball well to stretch the defence and open up many holes.

This was the Reds first visit to Dorking who play in an attractive setting overlooked by Box Hill.

With the advantage of the slope Redruth started well with McAtee running 50m, but he was unable to link with Lewis Vinnicombe.

Dorking finished off a period of pressure to take the first score when winger Mike Terelak went over for a try converted by Fraser MacDonald.

Redruth had chances and finally got on the scoreboard when after blindside play from Goodfellow, Ashley Hosking give a good pass to put Robin Wedlake over for a try.

Hosking converted this to level the scores with 15 minutes gone.

In the first half, Redruth had a strong scrum and line-out and the game went from end to end, however a blow was dealt when the visitors lost McAtee with an arm injury.

Home scrum-half Will Crow went over for his first try with 32 minutes gone, MacDonald converting and adding a penalty to see the home side take a 17-7 advantage into the break.

At the start of the second half, Redruth had a couple of good positions from scrums in the right hand corner but they could not take advantage and the game rapidly went away from them as the hosts started to run the ball from everywhere.

The floodgates opened when Cameron Cowell ran a good line to cut the Reds defence and grab a try from 45m which MacDonald converted after 47 minutes.

Playing with the wind did not seem to be an advantage of the away team as Crow went over for a second try to build a 24 point lead going into the final quarter.

Unable to stem the home side’s fluent style, Redruth were under a lot of pressure and a rather fortunate second try from Terelak following a chip ahead saw heads drop.

Dorking ran in late tries with the Reds down to 14 men from Crow to complete his hat-trick and replacement Joseph Mogaji, the last one converted by MacDonald to bring up the half century.
